Running head: Acquisition of Anaphora by SRNs The Acquisition of Anaphora by Simple Recurrent Networks

چکیده
This paper describes experiments in applying the Simple Recurrent Network (SRN) architecture (Elman 1991, 1993) to the task of learning the grammatical dependencies involved in re exive and pronominal anaphora. This task requires more re ned sensitivity to grammatical structure than others that have been studied in previous explorations of the language learning capacity of SRNs. When evaluated quantitatively, SRNs performed very well in assigning reference to pronouns and re exives. However, the manner in which SRNs achieved such performance and the generalizations that the networks learned diverged in certain key respects from those of the target grammar: (i) linear N-V-re exive and N-V-pronoun sequences which do not stand in a relevant structural relation nonetheless signi cantly a ect the network's interpretations, and lead to errors unlike those made by humans; (ii) the network represents di erent sentence types in distinct fashions, inhibiting systematic generalization from one to the other; (iii) the network's knowledge of the conditions on anaphoric dependencies is item speci c and does not generalize to novel lexical items. These results have important consequences not only for the viability of SRNs are models of language learning but also for questions of systematicity of generalization in neural networks (Hadley 1994; Marcus 1998). Acquisition of English anaphora by Iranian EFL learners
The present study examined the acquisition of anaphora in English by Iranian EFL learners as well as Persian speaking children. To do so, the study was conducted in three phases. In the first phase, 40 intermediate female and male EFL learners were selected from Puyan Institute in Takestan, Iran. Then, an off-line based Grammatical Judgment Task was administered. In the second phase, 40 female ...
متن کاملUsing Word Similarity Lists For Resolving Indirect Anaphora
In this work we test the use of word similarity lists for anaphora resolution in Portuguese corpora. We applied an automatic lexical acquisition technique over parsed texts to identify semantically similar words. After that, we made use of this lexical knowledge to resolve coreferent definite descriptions where the head-noun of the anaphor is different from the head-noun of its antecedent, whic...
متن کاملImproving Definite Anaphora Resolution by Effective Weight Learning and Web-Based Knowledge Acquisition
In this paper, effective Chinese definite anaphora resolution is addressed by using feature weight learning and Web-based knowledge acquisition. The presented salience measurement is based on entropybased weighting on selecting antecedent candidates. The knowledge acquisition model is aimed to extract more semantic features, such as gender, number, and semantic compatibility by employing multip...
متن کاملAnaphora Resolution Involving Interactive Knowledge Acquisition
Anaphora resolution in current computer-processable controlled natural languages relies mainly on syntactic information, accessibility constraints and the distance of the anaphoric expression to its antecedent. This design decision has the advantage that a text can be processed automatically without any additional ontological knowledge, but it has the disadvantage that the author is severely re...
